Paris, France (PRWEB) March 07, 2013

BIO Intelligence Service and Alcatel-Lucent have completed the ICT Sustainability Outlook: An Assessment of the Current State of Affairs and a Path Towards Improved Sustainability for Public Policies. This forward-looking study assesses the current state of the ICT sector’s sustainability and anticipates how it will evolve between now and 2020.

Key findings include:

More people are using more devices that are consuming more data. Alcatel-Lucents researchers at Bell Labs estimate that total network traffic could be 35 times greater than todays levels by 2020.
The ICT sector is currently responsible for approximately 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This is expected to increase to 4% by 2020. If network traffic continued to grow, but energy efficiency advances were not made, then the GHG emissions of the ICT sector would be 10 times greater than all other emissions sources combined.
The current generation of core network technologies is expected to reach its maximum energy efficiency by 2017. New technological breakthroughs will be required to move beyond this impasse.
The ICT sector and its products and services enable the global economy to operate more efficiently, resulting in the reduction of greenhouse gases that are five to seven times greater than the greenhouse gas emissions from the ICT sector itself.
Ambitious, long-term public policy that is made in cooperation with the ICT industry can help ensure that future breakthroughs are made. Of 50 public policies targeting the ICT sector in OECD countries, only 8 seek to maximize the benefit that ICT has across the economy.

Eric Labouze, Founder and CEO of BIO Intelligence Service, explains: “There is a common interest in making sure that the benefits of ICT are not outweighed by its environmental impact. That is not the case today, and so long as public policy makers and the ICT sector continue to work together in the future, we can be quite certain that the benefits will increase dramatically, while the negative impacts remain manageable.”

Gabrielle Gauthey, Vice President of Public Affairs at Alcatel-Lucent adds: “We are committed to working with our partners in the sector and in governments worldwide to ensure that our products enhance the lives of people around the world. That means providing useful services, like access to the world’s communications networks, but also being certain that the net environmental impacts are positive. As this study shows, that is the case. The ICT sector contributes more to reducing greenhouse gas emissions than it emits itself.”

The study concludes with the following recommendations for public policy makers:

1. build intelligently by deploying smart infrastructure and, in particular, the smart grid;

2. support energy efficient mobile network access;

3. anticipate and maximise the benefit of the cloud;

4. encourage and support advanced research;

5. support industry efforts to harmonise impact assessment methodologies.

The results of the study will be presented and discussed at an after-work networking cocktail at the BIO Intelligence Service headquarters in Paris on the evening of March 28, 2013.
